Embroidered Patches

Stitched with Thread

Embroidered patches are stitched with thread onto a fabric backing, creating a raised, textured look that holds up well to wear and washing. They work best for simple to moderately detailed designs like logos and lettering, and can be applied by sewing, ironing, or with Velcro backing. While durable and professional-looking, they cannot reproduce ultra-fine details or very small text as sharply as woven or printed options.

Woven Patches

Weaving Threads

Woven patches are made by weaving threads on a backing material, producing a flat, smooth surface with sharp lines and clean edges. This lets them display small text, intricate logos, and gradients that embroidery can’t capture clearly. They’re thinner, more flexible, and still durable enough for everyday use, but lack the raised texture of embroidered patches.

Heat Transfer Patches

Heat-activated Ink

Heat transfer patches use printed, heat-activated inks to fuse full-color designs onto a backing, allowing photo-quality images, fine details, and smooth gradients. Applied with a heat press, they’re thin, lightweight, and work on most fabrics, making them ideal for detailed branding and promotional items. However, they don’t offer the texture of traditional patches and may wear faster under heavy use or frequent washing.

Chenille Patches

Looping Yarn

Chenille patches are made by looping yarn through a felt backing, creating a plush, raised surface with a vintage varsity look. They’re best suited for large, simple designs like letters, numbers, and mascots, as the fuzzy texture obscures fine detail. While nostalgic and eye-catching, chenille can wear down faster in high-friction areas and isn’t recommended for intricate artwork.

PVC Patches

Soft, Flexible Plastic

PVC patches are molded from soft, flexible plastic, offering a modern 3D effect that’s waterproof and highly durable. Their crisp contours and vivid colors make them perfect for outdoor gear, tactical equipment, backpacks, and jackets. They’re heavier and less breathable than fabric patches and may not suit traditional or vintage styles.

Backing Options

Sew-on

Permanent and reliable, ideal for any patch type on heavy-use items and frequent washing.

Iron-on

Heat-activated adhesive for quick application, common on embroidered and woven patches; not recommended for PVC or chenille.

Velcro

Hook-and-loop system for easy on/off; popular for tactical uniforms and interchangeable gear, especially with PVC patches.

Border Cuts

Merrowed Edge

Overlocked stitch wraps around the edge for a traditional, fray-resistant finish; best for simple shapes like circles and rectangles and ideal for embroidered and chenille patches.

Laser-Cut (Heat-Cut) Edge

Precise hot or laser trimming follows your design outline, perfect for intricate or custom shapes; slightly less fray-resistant than merrowed edges.

Frequently Asked Questions About
Custom Patches

How do I know which patch type is right for my design?

It depends on your logo and where you plan to use it. Embroidered patches offer a classic 3D texture, while woven patches are better for thin designs with fine detail. If you need something rugged for outdoor gear, PVC is the most durable choice. For a vintage varsity look, chenille is the way to go.

What is the difference between a merrowed edge and a laser-cut edge?

A merrowed edge is a traditional overlocked stitch that wraps around the border, making it very fray-resistant but limited to simple shapes like circles. A laser-cut edge is precision-trimmed to follow the exact outline of your custom design, which is ideal for complex or unique shapes.

Are there any hidden costs in the pricing table?

No. Our pricing is all-inclusive and covers everything except sales tax. This means your professional design service, the physical patches, and even expedited shipping are all included in the price you see on the grid.

Which backing option should I choose?

Sew-on backings are the most permanent and reliable for items that get washed frequently. Iron-on backings are convenient for quick application on fabric, while Velcro is the best choice for tactical gear or uniforms where you want to swap patches out easily.

Can I get a digital proof before my patches are made?

Yes. Every order includes free professional design services. Our team will prepare a digital proof based on your artwork or notes for you to review and approve before we begin the manufacturing process.
